MELBOURNE, Fla. -- The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team completed a sweep of its four-match spring trip with a 6-3 win over 37th-ranked Florida Institute of Technology Wednesday in Melbourne, Florida. The win is the first for the Screaming Eagles over a Division II nationally ranked opponent since the 2007-08 season.
The victory also raised the Eagles' record to 10-1 overall, while the Panthers fall to 3-8.
USI took control of the match in doubles play with wins at number one and two doubles. Junior Joseph Boesing and sophomore Diego Gimenez opened the match with an 8-4 win at number one, while freshmen Juan Quiroz and Ben Boesing took number two doubles with an identical 8-4 advantage.
After the Eagles lost at number three doubles, USI won four of the six singles match to seal the match. Three of the singles wins came in third set tie-breakers. Quiroz, Joseph Boesing, and freshman Robert Nieters all needed an extra frame in the USI victory.
Ben Boesing clinched the match for USI at number four singles, posting the only Eagle victory in straight sets.
The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Tennis Courts for the first time this spring when they open GLVC action by hosting the University of Illinois-Springfield. Match time is noon Sunday.
